U.S. 13th in broadband deployment

Why? Why is one (notice I said one, not the) of the most technologically advanced, richest nations so far down the ladder and dropping? It doesn’t make sense that we (the U.S.) pay so much for high-speed Internet when a dozen other countries get twice, even three times, the speed at half (or even less) the price.

C-Net has a good story on why this may be. I don’t think government intervention is the way to go to get cheaper broadband but the Bells could stop being so damn greedy about it. Think about how many more customers they would get if they dropped the price by just a third. The loss in profit margins would be made up in the number of subscribers.

I’m not saying that just because we are the U.S. that we deserve cheap high-speed Internet access. I’m saying that it would be more accessible to people if it were lower priced. I fully believe that the Internet is a great tool for learning and that it should be used by everyone as such a tool. I do not believe that it should be subsidized so that one group is paying for access for another group. Many libraries and schools have access to the Internet but it would be a very useful thing for children to have at home (if moderated, but that’s another topic).

I agree, but not too long ago, I remember Mr. Bush saying that everyone in the US would have broadband by 2007…..
Hell, I wish I could get the other countries speed for the price they pay
