MareNostrum has awoken

The fastest supercomputer in Europe is now booted up and processing data at 40 teraflops (40 trillion calculations per second). It does as many calculations in one second as you would do on a calculator in 10 million years.

The computer is the fourth most powerful supercomputer in the world and the fastest of any installed in a government-owned research center accessible to outside investigators.

The computer was built by IBM and is installed at a research center in Barcelona. It will be used by researchers in computer architecture, aerodynamics, biology and genetics.
