MS Virtual Server 2005 R2: Free

Microsoft has decided to give away Virtual Server 2005 R2 Enterprise Edition for free! This is not a trial version. It is available in 32- and 64-bit editions.

A Microsoft Passport Network account is required in order to download the program.

    Despirately so. :mrgreen:

    Even though it’s a monopolistic kind of move, they seem to have been forced into this one. That’s got to be a good sign.

    I wonder at what point did they say “We’re not gaining any ground on the likes of VMWare. What can we do to get it out there a little more?”

    I tried it yesterday and installed Ubunut Linux. The install went ok but I had two problems:

    1. The Broadcom network card in the workstation didn’t like the Virtual Network driver so a guest OS can’t use the host NIC.

    2. Ubuntu didn’t like the 30″ LCD screen.

    I can understand #2 but VMWare works fine with the Broadcom NIC so I don’t know what the VS 2005 issue is.
