Reloading the Blackberry

My Blackberry 7100i died this morning after I had to remove the battery and SIM card. The error message during the boot process, after putting the battery and SIM back in, was “JVM 102″ (Java Virtual Machine). I tried resetting it many times but it would never get past the error.

In order to fix it, I had to download:

I did not download the Desktop Manager available through the links on the Nextel Blackberry site because it was an older version. I had to hit the Blackberry Downloads web site for the updated version.

After installing both pieces of software, I removed the battery (per tech support suggestions) from the 7100i and connected it to my desktop (USB). I tried wiping the software from the 7100i but it kept hanging on step 2 (of 7 or 8 ) of the reload. After trying four times, I decided to try it with the battery in and it worked fine. The Blackberry OS was reloaded and my phone would actually start up.

I still had a problem after it was started. I couldn’t get the Desktop Manager to detect the 7100i connected to the USB port. The Blackberry Device Manager showed it was connected but the DM kept saying it was disconnected. In order to correct that issue, I had to go into the Windows Device Manager and remove the RIM ports installed under Ports (COM & LPT) listing.

Four hours and one PC reboot later (because the ports uninstalling):

I was worried for a little while there. I’ve gotten to attached to the phone, and it’s many uses, so it would have caused a problem if I would have had to send it off for repair (another suggestion from tech support).
