Flash Player 9 on my Ubuntu laptop

Adobe has finally allowed me to stop getting the “You need Flash Player 8″ on some websites. I downloaded the Linux Flash Player 9 beta and it’s working without a hitch.

If you’re using Ubuntu, or one of it’s variants, the installation for Firefox is simple. Run the following commands in Terminal (or Konsole or whatever terminal program you have).

  1. wget http://www.adobe.com/go/fp9_update_b1_installer_linuxplugin
  2. tar xvf FP9_plugin_beta_101806.tar.gz
  3. sudo cp flash-player-plugin-9.0.21.55/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins

Remove the break between libflashplayer.so and /usr, there should only be a space. Now, if you restart Firefox and type about:plugins into the address bar, you should see Shockwave Flash 9.0 d55 under the Shockwave Flash heading.

Note: The steps were written assuming that you did a default Firefox installation using the Ubuntu packages. If you did a custom installation, change the /usr/lib/ path to match where you installed Firefox.
