New workstation
I got a workstation upgrade. I had my old workstation, a Dell Precision 380, for about a year and a half. It was a nice machine but the new one blows it away.
The workstation is a Dell Precision 490 Mini-Tower. Here are the specs:
- Two dual-core Intel 5110 processors (1.6 GHz)
- 4 GB RAM
- Two 160 GB SATA hard drives (RAID 1)
- The RAID is my boot/program drive.
- One 750 GB SATA storage drive
- Visiontek x1600 Pro (ATI chipset)
- DVD-RW and CD-RW drives
I kept my 30″ Dell Widescreen. The system is running Windows XP Pro. We don’t have any intentions of upgrading to Windows Vista any time soon because XP works just fine.
This thing screams! I’m in the process of reinstalling all my software. That will take a little time.

Have you had any problems running an XP Pro system with that much RAM?
Not so far, everything is running fine. Windows is only reporting 3GB but I may have found a fix.
