Goodbye Charter, Vonage

I’m making the switch away from Charter and Vonage. It’s not because I was getting bad service from either company. It’s all based on a better value from BellSouth (the “new” AT&T).

After figuring up how much I was paying for cable TV & Internet (3Mb/256K), Vonage and Cingular, I contacted BellSouth to see what kind of package deal I could get from them. I ended up getting everything at a savings of over $50 per month. Not only that but I am getting bumped up to the 6 Mb down / 512 Kb up DSL line with a static IP. That’s twice the speed that Charter offered me when I called them for any special offers.

The best part is the fact that I’m getting over $800 dollars in rebates! At least that’s what the sales lady told me. We’ll see how that all pans out. The only thing I had to pay for up front was for the DVR (DirecTV, $99) but that is one of the rebates I get back. The $42 BellSouth connection fee was dropped so that’s just one more piece of savings.

If I get all the rebates, I’ll end up netting almost 7 months worth of service for free. Sweet.

I just upgraded my DSL last night, for the first time in 4 years! For the past 4 years, I’ve had DSL Ultra (1.5mbps down/256kbps up), and I just upgraded to DSL Extreme (3mbps down/384kbps up).
