Quick and easy NAS

I’ve been looking for a cheap NAS solution for a while now. Portable hard drives are available but I didn’t want to do a shared drive. I wanted an actual network storage system that wouldn’t cut too deep into my wallet. Most of the ones I found were over $130 and they only allowed one hard drive. What if I wanted to expand it later on?

OpenDNS: Should you make the switch?

There’s a new public DNS service called OpenDNS that a lot of people are buzzing about. According to the OpenDNS site, the benefits of using OpenDNS are that it is safer, faster, smarter and free. It is definitely free but what about the other claims? Let’s take a look at each of them and find out more.

Review: Comodo Firewall

I’ve been looking for a good, free firewall replacement for my Windows XP machine since the ones from Sygate and Kerio were removed from the market. I tried the free version of ZoneAlarm from ZoneLabs but I didn’t use it long. The main issue I had with the free ZoneAlarm firewall was the lack of configuration options. The Pro version offers what I wanted but I didn’t care about all the extra bells and whistles so I decided to keep looking for a free firewall to replace Sygate.

The PC OS debate, part 3 (final)

Now that we’ve got security and ease of use out of the way, let’s take a look at compatibility. Compatibility encompasses two things: hardware and software. Hardware compatibility will mainly deal with driver issues and software compatibility will deal with software used in the majority of households and businesses.

The PC OS debate, part 2

I’ve covered my views on security, now let’s take a look at ease of use. As hard as it may be to take, Windows is definitely the easiest to use versus Linux or BSD when it comes to beginner or average users. Maybe the work on making it easy to use is causing the Windows developers to overlook security but their work is paying off. Windows ease of use is one of the reasons that it became such a power house in the desktop OS market.
