AVG Free 7.5 & Firefox 2.0

Grisoft recently released the free edition of AVG 7.5. Aside from aesthetic changes (see screenshots), the program runs much better than the previous release. Resource usage is lower and scanning seems to be faster, especially when scanning zipped files.

Mozilla is set to release the latest incarnation of Firefox, version 2.0. It’s not available on their main site but you can try snagging it from the FTP site or here (both are currently getting hammered).

Browzar the browsing tool

People like their privacy. Ok, maybe not exibitionists so much but the other people do. Keeping your browsing habits secret is fairly easy to do if you know how to do it. The problem is that some people don’t know how or just don’t want the hassle of manually dumping their browser cache.

Firefox has an option to automatically empty it’s cache and remove cookies but you must enable that option (Preferences -> Privacy -> Settings). Internet Explorer, on the other hand, doesn’t so you must go into the Internet Options and clear the cache manually. That shortcoming is where Browzar steps in.

Digging the new skin

I really like the Liquifox skin for Firefox. It’s based on Microfirefox so the icons and menu bars are small. The color scheme for Liquifox, in my opinion, is much better because I don’t care much for the dark gray of Microfirefox. It’s a really nice skin to use if you have a system that doesn’t have a high resolution video card (like my laptop, 1024×768 max).

Those of you that use Firefox as your main browser, what skin do you like? Also, what plugins (extensions) do you recommend?

Even the setup program has style

I downloaded the latest version of Opera in order to check out the new additions said to have been added. What is up with the first screen when you run setup? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, here is a screen capture:

[german accent]Oh yes! Our program is so sexy and stylish. Look at our generic desktop and laptop….we can run on that. Party girls and models love us. We are everyones browser.[/german accent]

Ok, all cheesiness aside, it is a good browser. I haven’t tried out the Widgets yet but that is up next. Check out the people enjoying the new widgets (as seen on the Widgets site):

Party girl, stoner guy and Matrix guy love widgets!

Firefox: Installing old extensions in new releases

Yesterday, I wrote about changing your browser title and it was found that the Titlebar Tweaks extension wouldn’t work with FF 1.5.x. After playing around with the extension, I was able to get it to work with FF 1.5.0.1. I also found, in the process, the way I got it to work also worked for other extensions that would error out if you tried to install them on newer versions of FF.
