Any kinks in the system?

I finally updated WordPress to version 2.3. The theme I’m using had some issues after the update but I think I’ve fixed them all. The main problem occurred on the single post pages. No matter how many comments were attached to the post, only the first comment showed up. All comments were visible if viewed on the main page using the AJAX comment link (show/hide comment). I used the comments.php code from a WP 2.3 compatible theme and that fixed the problem.

The only other issue I had during the upgrade was caused by me forgetting to disable all the plugins. A couple of the ones I had aren’t compatible with WP 2.3. When I tried to upgrade the install, all I would get was a white screen. I had a current backup of the files so I deleted all of the plugins. That allowed me to finish the upgrade and test each plugin individually.

Thanks to this article, I was able to do a simple modification to the Magellan theme so it would support tags. There is still some tweaking left to do so let me know if you come across any errors.

WordPress Theme Generator

Want an easy way to make your own WordPress theme? Check out the WordPress Theme Generator. There are a lot of options to choose from:

All changes are updated in the preview window immediately when you move from the editing field. If it doesn’t update, simply click the Preview button at the bottom of the page. The themes created with the WP Theme Generator include Widget support.

Once you’ve designed the theme how you want, you can download it by clicking the Save button. The download is a single zip file that can be extracted and uploaded to your WordPress installation.

The background choices may not appeal to you but you can always change it. Just download the theme you create with a background image, change out the image file and change the filename in the style sheet to match your preferred background. Quick, easy and you can learn a little CSS while you’re at it. :)

Screenshot examples of themes created using the WP Theme Generator can be found on the author’s website.

Your blog after life

What happens to your blog after you die? I know, it’s a morbid thought but it is inevitable. You pass away and the people that did visit your site just think, “He must have just stopped posting.”

That’s where Next Of Kin comes into play. This WordPress plugin will count the time from when you last visited your blog. If a predetermined number of weeks pass without a visit, you are sent a warning email. You can reset the counter if you receive the message otherwise another message will go out after the second predetermined number of weeks passes. Once the third number of weeks passes, you’re assumed to be dead so the final message goes out to your intended recipients. The idea behind the final message is that you send someone your blog login info so that they can maintain your digital memorial. Or just post that you’re dead, either one works.

Once the plugin is uploaded and activated, go to Options -> Next Of Kin and enable the plugin. The settings have easy to understand descriptions so configuring it is simple

Easiest WordPress upgrade ever

Thanks to Ajay, upgrading to WordPress 2.1.1 from 2.1 was easy. Ajay created a zip file that only contains the updated files to upgrade:

Total time to upgrade, including uploading the files, was less than a minute.  I already had a backup of my files after the last update.

Keeping Magellan

After working with this theme for a while today, I think I’ll stick with it. I didn’t think I’d like the three-column look at first but it’s kind of grown on me.

I’ve installed a few plugins so that it operates kind of like my last theme did. The plugins are:

I also decided to start using the web buttons again. I think they go really well with the layout. Another category, F/OSS, was added in order to designate links to Free/Open Source Software. If I link to you, let me know if you have a different button you want me to use.

More tweaking to come so don’t be surprised if you see some odd happenings.
